About the Workshop
Making the Most out of the Song
Undoubtedly, we all love songs and so do our learners. They need a kind of hook to get engaged in the topic and we can use a piece of music for that. Not only do songs help us generate interest and motivate our learners, music is a great resource for lessons on systems as well. We can use songs to teach vocabulary, focus on pronunciation and clarify some grammar. You name it.

At our workshop, we will create a set of different tasks based on the one and only song. You will be able to use them right away. Alexey Lebedev will show you many different approaches and outcomes, and you will realize that creating tasks is not that time-consuming. Having worked with songs for a while Alexey Lebedev knows what works well with students, but he is open to new ideas — we will share, discuss and have fun working on the best piece of art — a song.

Writing for CPE: The impact of tone on communicative achievement
The session with Alena Nikitina will be devoted to a quite underexplored notion of tone in exam writing.
Sometimes, when we are supposed to write on a topic we feel strong about, we might get carried away and pour out all the negativity we have toward a contentious subject in our text, and ultimately on our reader.
The question is: To what extent can we expose our feelings in exam writing? Especially, if you don’t feel in any way positive about the subject you are writing about…
In the session with Alena Nikitina we:
⁃ will give the definition of tone;
⁃ will discuss the connection of tone and register;
⁃ will see how the tone of your writing might contribute to your grade for communicative achievement;
⁃ will discuss what a candidate should avoid doing in their writing in order not to put the reader off.
